Setting is Jaime Fennelly (Mind Over Mirrors, Peeeesseye), multi-instrumentalist Nathan Bowles (Pelt, Black Twig Pickers) and percussionist Joe Westerlund (Califone, Sylvan Esso, Bon Iver, Megafaun). Their album, “Shone a Rainbow Light On,” was released in late-September by the record label Paradise of Bachelors, and has been receiving some very positive international press including receiving a “9/10” from Uncut and Mojo magazine listing the album as #3 of Underground Records of 2023, calling it “a record that spectacularly reconciles micro-detailed improv with deep-listening ambience.”

Setting is a trio comprising Nathan Bowles (solo/trio, Pelt, Black Twig Pickers) on strings, keys, and percussion; Jaime Fennelly (Mind Over Mirrors, Peeesseye) on harmoniums, synthesizers, and piano zither; and Joe Westerlund (solo, Califone, Sylvan Esso, Jake Xerxes Fussell) on drums, percussion, and metallophones. Their debut album “Shone a Rainbow Light On” on Paradise of Bachelors traverses textural, phosphorescent topography with a certified organic folk-engine. Fueled by a vibratory hybrid of acoustic and electronic instrumentation, the four stately longform pieces sound like a UFO slowly sinking into a peat bog.
Caley Conway is a Milwaukee-based songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, a trailblazer of the Midwest music community who has toured widely and shared stages with such heavy hitters as Phoebe Bridgers and Julien Baker. In her first full-length release since 2019’s ‘Surrounded Middle,’ Conway brings us ‘Partner’ (releasing Oct. 28 on Crutch of Memory Enterprises), a keen examination of love, co-dependence, and the struggle to maintain one’s sense of self as half of a pair.
‘Partner’ whisks listeners into a lush and churning inner world, honing in on the untidy collisions of big dreams and everyday demands, freedom and anxiety, clouds and computers. No sound or texture is off-limits to Conway, whose creative vision and precision songwriting never fail to deliver on surprises. Synths, omnichords, horns, keys, and guitars adorn the record’s ten tracks, co-produced by Conway and Josh Evert of Silver City Studios. Among other notable contributors, the album features longtime Conway collaborators Ellie Jackson on backing vocals and Devin Drobka on drums. Recorded partly in studio and partly in Conway’s bedroom, the album feels as intimate as it does explosive.
Barry Paul Clark is a classically trained bassist, improviser, composer, electronic musician and experimental artist living in Wauwatosa. Along with film scoring work, his many other projects include: Tontine Ensemble, Argopelter, Lawste, adoptahighway, and Cathedral Becomes Tomb.
