Film Screening: TONY CONRAD: COMPLETELY IN THE PRESENT – a nonfiction film by award-winning filmmaker Tyler Hubby that examines the pioneering life and works of filmmaker, musician, artist, and educator Tony Conrad.

“Joyous, exhilarating, and transformative, Tyler Hubby’s documentary Tony Conrad: Completely in the Present is essential viewing for anyone involved in the history of music and visual art.” —Artforum

“Conrad was 100 percent badass. Without Tyler Hubby’s documentary and Table of the Elements … one of the great stories of American music and art might have gone under appreciated.” —Henry Rollins, L.A. Weekly

Since the early 1960s, Tony Conrad’s films and compositions have been the stuff of legend for artists and musicians everywhere. He performed in and recorded the soundtrack to Jack Smith’s legendary Flaming Creatures; he laid bare the paradigms of cinema with The Flicker, a film composed of only black and white frames; his powerful and startling drone compositions still have the music establishment scratching their heads; his early work with La Monte Young and John Cale played a role in the formation of The Velvet Underground; as an early adopter of activist public access television he democratized the emerging medium of portable video for ordinary citizens. His fifty-year inter-disciplinary repertoire inspired and confounded generations of artists, collaborators, and fans. In his later years, he continued to perform and make work that pushed the boundaries of reason, for which he has finally begun to receive worldwide attention.

Talk: HAL RAMMELVIEWS THROUGH A KALEIDOPHONE – Rammel will discuss the history of this unusual object along with other information from his forthcoming book to be published by Table of the Elements.

Table of the Elements record spin and giveaways.

“Rammel’s photographs burst with hypnotic energy, inviting us into an active engagement—a momentary performance frozen in time, where light, sound, and perception converge in a hypnotic dialogue. In this act of revival, Rammel celebrates the playful inheritance of science as art, reminding us that the unseen energies of the universe can be both mesmerizing and deeply poetic.” – Table of the Elements

Visual artist, musician and author Hal Rammel has been involved in the creative arts for the past 45 years. His work as a visual artist encompasses drawing, sculpture and collage, cartooning, and photography (pinhole and alternative cameraless processes). His work has been shown at the Carnegie Museum of Art (Pittsburg, PA), the Museum of Contemporary Art (Chicago, IL), the John Michael Kohler Arts Center (Sheboygan, WI) and others. As a composer and improviser he utilizes musical instruments of his own design and construction. A selection of these instruments are in the permanent collection of the National Music Museum in Vermillion, SD.

About Table of the Elements:

TABLE OF THE ELEMENTS is a curatorial platform, interdisciplinary production organization, live-event presenter, and fine-arts print, audio, and film publisher, lauded by Pitchfork Media as “a national treasure.” Since its origin as a record label in 1993, TotE has been dedicated to preserving, promoting, and promulgating works by international creators of experimental audio, avant-performance, and modern composition. The label’s 150-plus releases are a vital contemporary chronicle, a survey of meaningful eruptions across a broad horizon of sound and vision. Each project demonstrates how a publishing concern might romp wild, unbridled from the carousel of convention.
