About Rob Roy Campbell and Vinni Hancock:

The band began with an experiment. In early 2024, after roughly twenty-five years of writing songs without releasing a record or playing a show, Rob Roy Campbell started offering what he called a concert for one: he would play for a single listener, at a time and place of their choosing, hand them a lyric sheet, play eight songs, answer any questions, and leave. No money changed hands and nobody else was invited. The second person to accept was Vinni Hancock, who chose his studio and her own lunch break. The next morning she sent back eight of her own poems, one for every song he had played, which she had never shown to anyone. One of them was a song by that afternoon. They have written around sixty together since.

Campbell spent thirty-two years in Chicago’s independent music world before moving north in 2020. At twenty he took over the label Underdog Records with two friends and ran it as a volunteer-run collective, putting out a run of releases including Cap’n Jazz, whom he also recorded. He ran a loft space in Chicago-that hosted a Drag City Records party with a live performance by Bonnie “Prince” Billy, and since 2002 has designed and built vacuum tube recording equipment under the name Electronaut for clients including Wilco and Lupe Fiasco. Hancock is a published poet and essayist who wrote features for the Peninsula Pulse for six years, co-founded the nonprofit creative writing center Write On, Door County in 2012, and holds two elected local offices. She had never written a song or played an instrument when the two met. She now plays piano on the records, shapes the arrangements, and creates every piece of artwork the band releases.

Live, they sit side by side with a microphone each and take turns telling audiences where the songs came from, and Hancock recites some of the lyrics as poetry before the songs they belong to. They look for rooms where people have come to listen. Six sold-out local shows so far, among them a Fireside Coffeehouse Concert at the Door Community Auditorium in January 2026, and in October 2025 Campbell was invited on stage at the Hug and Pint in Glasgow by the Drag City artist Alasdair Roberts.

About their new album:

Little Book is thirteen songs, recorded at the Snapcrackle Tabernacle, a derelict church in Door County that Campbell spent three years rebuilding into a studio and performance space. Hancock painted an original piece for every song, and each song arrives on its own page with a written story of where it came from, both of them writing those. The two produced all of it themselves, from the writing through mixing and mastering.
