Mark Scherer

Ukulele

Eight years ago, Mark’s wife came home and told him she’d discovered the perfect new interest for him, the Ukulele Society of Door County. No ifs, ands, or buts. Mark reached out to the leader, purchased his first ukulele, and joined the club. The excitement began. He learned to play the uke, made new friends, and had fun. So, if you want to learn the ukulele, sing songs and have some fun, come learn the uke with Mark.

Mark grew up in a musical family. Everyone sang in church, school choirs, and played piano. In college, Mark majored in music education. His first teaching position was in elementary music, then middle school vocal music. He taught himself guitar chords to accompany general music classes. Early in his career, he made a big change. He returned to college for a master’s degree. He chose to teach 5th, 2nd, and eventually 3rd grade classes. Music was always a joy. It enhanced his teaching and lifestyle. He wrote and arranged musicals for his class and the school. For fun, he performed in community theater and semiprofessional choirs.

Mark taught ukulele at the Boy’s and Girl’s Club. He has private adult students. He is excited to begin teaching children again. There will be notes and chords to learn. There will be clunkers along the way. Soon there will be pretty sounds. There will be simple tunes and silly songs. There will be old and new melodies. Through it all, there will be challenges and successes designed to learn something new.
